Katarina Witt started to ice skate at the age 5 years. It was not long before her talent became evident, and then in Karl-Marx-Stadt she was accepted into an institution specifically designed for children with athletic abilities. Her coach Jutta was also in attendance. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982 when she finished second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt captured the eyes of the world and she's dominated her sport ever since. Olympic success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating after a fiercely contested contest. In a more competitive competition, four years later, Witt won the medal. Free skates were not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of the performances she made at both mandatory figures (short program) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt is the first figure skater female to win the same event twice since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame After enjoying great success in the field of acting, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. In spite of not receiving a gold medal, Witt was a hit with the spectators. The year 1995 was the year that Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
